Where laminate beats hardwood, and where it doesn't
Mannington builds the laminate line we carry, and the appeal is straightforward: the visual of a wide-plank hardwood floor at a fraction of the cost, with a photographic layer under a clear wear coat instead of real wood grain. It genuinely wins in a hallway, an entry, a rental, or any room that takes hard use and doesn't get the forgiveness of a rug-covered bedroom. It loses to real hardwood in one place: a laminate floor can't be sanded and refinished the way solid or engineered wood can, so once the wear layer is gone, the plank gets replaced, not restored. For a floor you plan to keep thirty years in one room, hardwood is still the better bet. For the rooms taking the actual daily abuse, laminate holds up at a price that makes sense.
Wear layers: the number that actually matters
The wear layer, the clear top coat over the printed pattern, is what determines how a laminate floor ages, not the pattern underneath it. A thin wear layer in a hallway shows traffic patterns within a couple of years; a heavier one in the same hallway doesn't. We walk you through the wear-layer thickness on each Mannington line we carry, so the board you pick matches the room it's going into instead of being picked on pattern alone and found out later.

Laminate floats over an underlayment rather than fastening or gluing down, which is part of why it installs quickly. That underlayment matters more than most people expect. A subfloor that isn't flat telegraphs through a floating floor over time, so we check for that before laying a single plank, not after a customer calls back six months in.
The underlayment also carries a lot of the sound-dampening a laminate floor needs, since it lacks the density that hardwood or tile has underfoot. It's an easy step to skip and an expensive one to fix afterward, which is why it's never optional on our installs.
